Booking entertainment online usually feels straightforward. But when I was hired to provide music for a wedding in New Jersey, the process was different. The bride shared her nervousness about hiring someone online for the first time. She feared being scammed, a worry I understood well because I had been scammed before. Her anxiety stuck with me more than I expected, and it changed how I approached the event.
The Anxiety That Changed Everything
From the start, the bride’s fear was clear. She wasn’t worried about the wedding itself but about trusting a stranger online. This concern is common today. Scams happen daily, and many people hesitate to book services without meeting in person. I knew I had to reassure her. I explained my experience, showed proof of past work, and promised transparency. She seemed to relax, and I thought everything was settled.
But her anxiety had already affected me. I became self-conscious, second-guessing my every move. Instead of focusing fully on my role, I carried her fear as if it were my own. This feeling stayed with me until the wedding day.
The Wedding Day and the Unexpected Moment
I arrived on time at a beautiful country-club style venue. Usually, I would head straight to the chapel to set up and prepare. But this time, I felt unusually relaxed. I sat on a white bench near the entrance, watching the surroundings.
That’s when I noticed two strong, elegant white horses pulling a buggy across the property. The sight was captivating. When someone asked for help to notify the team when to prepare the horse and buggy after the ceremony, I volunteered without hesitation.
I didn’t expect the ceremony to be so short. By the time I returned, it was over. The bride was crying, and the groom looked upset and disappointed. I was speechless. My first thought was to offer a refund, but I doubted it would fix the moment. It felt like a disaster.
Then I woke up.
The Dream That Taught Me a Lesson
It was only a dream. The wedding was still to come, but the anxiety I had absorbed from the bride had affected me deeply. This dream was a wake-up call. It showed me how powerful subconscious fear can be when we carry someone else’s worries as our own.
Instead of letting fear take over, I needed to turn that energy into clarity and confidence. I realized that my role was not just to provide music but also to build trust and calm nerves. I had to separate my feelings from the client’s and stay focused on what I could control.
Rethinking Your Thinking: A Mindset Reset
What is the true aim of this story? I'm glad you asked—because this is where it becomes impactful.
The key phrase is straightforward yet transformative: I Woke Up. We've all experienced those dreams where, upon waking, we are grateful they weren't real. Relief envelops us. However, my "I woke up" moment wasn't about escaping a nightmare—it was about fully embracing my purpose.
